Psychological Factors Influencing Athlete Performance in Team Sports
Abstract
Abstract
This paper explores the multifaceted psychological factors that significantly influence athlete performance in team sports. While physical and technical prowess are undeniably crucial, the mental landscape of athletes and the collective psyche of a team often serve as determinants of success or failure. This review synthesizes existing literature to identify and discuss key psychological constructs, including individual athlete characteristics and team-level dynamics.
Individual factors examined encompass motivation (intrinsic and extrinsic), self-confidence, anxiety (cognitive and somatic), emotional regulation, and mental toughness. The impact of these factors on an athlete's ability to perform consistently under pressure, maintain focus, and recover from setbacks is highlighted. At the team level, the abstract delves into the critical roles of group cohesion (task and social), leadership styles (e.g., transformational, autocratic), communication effectiveness, and role clarity. It discusses how positive inter-team relationships, shared goals, and effective conflict resolution contribute to a synergistic team environment conducive to peak performance.
